Bruny Island Beer Co. Lighthouse Ale

    $7.00 each

    5757a3f0777a421de3000f37-thumb-256x256

Lower strength beers have not traditionally sat comfortably in the imaginations of craft beer drinkers or brewers. Low alcohol is presumed to be analogous with low flavour and thus life, some say, is too short to drink light beer.

We believe it is time for this perception to change.

Lighthouse Ale is named after the famous Cape Bruny Lighthouse, which has stood on the edge of the wild Southern Ocean since 1938. Robust malty flavours are balanced by firm bitterness in this dark amber ale. Late additions of three Tasmanian aromatic hop varieties deliver subtle fruity and floral notes. We hope that our Lighthouse Ale can be a shining beacon of flavour that defies the sea of conformity! 2.8% abv

Bruny Island Beer Co. Oxymoron 500ml

    $9.50 each

What defines a dark ale? The words literally reference one end of a colour spectrum, yet the idea of dark beer often seems to carry a lot of baggage. We have crafted a challenge to any such preconceptions with our signature dark beer: a quaffable pale ale in drag. Built on a base of Tasmanian Westminster malted barley, Oxymoron is brewed with generous additions of malted wheat and rye, delivering spicy flavours, a textural lift and a dry finish, balanced by the richness of Crystal and Munich malts. Hefty additions of Enigma, Cascade and Willamette hops grown at Bushy Park contribute a pungent mélange of fruity, spicy and woody flavours and aromas.

Farm Ale is the first brew from us in our new brewery, Bruny Island Beer Co. This beer is unique and made entirely with Tasmanian grain, hops and water. Our flagship session ale is pale golden and naturally hazy, with a silky texture and sweet, nutty undertones. The foundation of this truly local brew is pale malted Westminster barley from farms in the Tasmanian midlands, oats from Kindred Organics in the coastal hills of the North-West and red wheat from fields overlooking the d’Entrecasteaux Channel just up the road from us on Bruny Island.

Bruny Island Beer Co. Metric Stout (SPECIAL RELEASE) 750ml

    $28.00 each

    579ee2e452ba0b23a200ab64-thumb-256x256

We have a limited amount of this exciting first release remaining in our range of premium beers that we bottle in 750ml Champagne bottles. This is our Metric Stout - a contemporary take on a traditional Imperial Stout. In the 18th century, strong stouts and porters were exported from England to a number of Northern European countries. The high level of alcohol evolved out of necessity as this prevented the brew from freezing when in transit. This style of stout was especially popular in Russia, particularly with the Imperial Court and became so named “Russian” or “Imperial” Stout. This stout will develop for several years with bottle age (we have already given it a couple of months in the bottle before releasing it). When young, expect strongly alcoholic with powerful roasted character and a very bitter finish. With years of age, the alcoholic and roasted characters meld together and the bitterness softens to produce Madeira-like characters. If you are a lover of stout, do not miss this one. Grab a couple of bottles - one to drink now and one to lay down for a while.

    Whey Stout 500ml

    $9.50 each

    582ab50c2faaf344b4007656-thumb-256x256

This is a stout that not only celebrates the colder months but also the long tradition of using milk or whey in brewing. The 'stout' family of beers flourished during the 19th and early 20th centuries. commonly regarded as extremely nourishing and were reputed to have many health benefits. 'Milk stouts' enriched with lactose were viewed as especially beneficial, and were even prescribed by doctors for a wide range of ailments. While the popularity of milk stouts waned during the latter half of the 20th century, the style has been reinvigorated in recent years by craft breweries around the world. With our brewery situated fifty metres from Bruny Island Cheese Co.'s production room, whey stout is a beer we've always wanted to make. Our brewers joined forces with the cheese makers on brewing day and formed a bucket chain to deliver 300 litres of cow's milk whey left over from making Raw Milk C2 to the brew kettle. Whey contains lactose, a naturally occurring milk sugar that beer yeasts cannot ferment, meaning that the lactose remains in the finished beer and increases its residual sugar content. Our whey stout has a full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel and tastes smooth and roasty, with a sweet, milk chocolate finish and just a hint of bitterness. Best enjoyed next to an open fire with a good book (hint hint).
